Friday 9/30/22 9pm ET: Feature LP: Robert Plant – Pictures At Eleven (1982)

Pictures at Eleven is the debut solo album by former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant, released on June 25, 1982. Genesis drummer Phil Collins played drums for five of the album’s eight songs. Ex-Rainbow drummer Cozy Powell handled drums on “Slow Dancer” and “Like I’ve Never Been Gone.” On the song “Fat Lip”, guitarist Robbie Blunt played a TR-808 drum machine. The title was an often-heard phrase in U.S. television news that would follow a brief announcement of a story of interest to be shown later during a station’s 11 PM news program. Pictures at Eleven is the only one of Plant’s solo albums to appear on Led Zeppelin’s record label Swan Song. By the time of Plant’s next release, 1983’s The Principle of Moments, Swan Song had ceased to function, and Plant had started his own label named Es Paranza, which would also be distributed by Atlantic Records.

Thursday 9/8/22 10pm ET: Feature LP: Robert Plant – The Principle of Moments (1983)

The Principle of Moments is the second solo studio album by the English singer Robert Plant, formerly of Led Zeppelin. It was Plant’s second Top 10 album in the US and UK. It also gave him his first solo Top 40 hit with “Big Log”. The most popular track on album-oriented rock radio in the US was “Other Arms”, which reached number-one on the Billboard Top Tracks chart. Genesis’ drummer Phil Collins played drums for six of the album’s eight songs (as he did on Pictures at Eleven). On the other two tracks former Jethro Tull drummer Barriemore Barlow performed.

Released July 11, 1983

Like Plant’s first solo album, Pictures at Eleven, the songs departed from the hard rock sound of Led Zeppelin. Following the strength of these albums, Plant launched a successful tour in 1983. Phil Collins was the drummer for Plant’s band for the North American portion of the tour. Collins was content to perform in the background, despite his own enormous success as a solo artist and with Genesis at the time. Little Feat’s Richie Hayward played drums for the remaining dates.

Rhino Entertainment released a remastered edition of the album, with bonus tracks, on April 3, 2007.

Wednesday 9/22/21 1:10am ET: Feature LP: Honeydrippers – Volume One (1984)

The Honeydrippers: Volume One is an EP released on September 24, 1984, by a band led by rock singer Robert Plant. The project originated when Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun wanted to record an album of his favorite songs from the 1950s. Plant was chosen because Ertegun had seen his pick-up band the Honeydrippers performing 1950s standards. Included in the band were Chic front man Nile Rodgers, Late Night with David Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer, and former Yardbirds guitarists Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page—the latter was also Plant’s former bandmate in Led Zeppelin.

Robert Plant has stated that this is his personal favorite project that he ever recorded.

The album was re-released in a remastered edition in 2007 as part of a Robert Plant remaster series, with the live version of “Rockin’ at Midnight” (previously released on the 12-inch single version of the studio recording) included as a bonus track. Plant and Ertegun discussed the possibility of doing another Honeydrippers album, but with the latter’s death in December 2006, the plan was shelved permanently.

Monday 11/16/2020 11pm ET: Feature LP: No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded (1994)

No Quarter is a live album by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, both formerly of English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released by Atlantic Records on October 14 1994. The long-awaited reunion between Jimmy Page and Robert Plant occurred on a 90-minute “UnLedded” MTV project, recorded in Morocco, Wales, and London. It was not a reunion of Led Zeppelin, however, as former bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones was not present. In fact, Jones was not even told about the reunion by his former bandmates. He later commented that he was unhappy about Plant and Page naming the album after “No Quarter”, a Led Zeppelin song which was largely his work.

In addition to acoustic numbers, the album features a reworking of Led Zeppelin classics featuring a Moroccan string band and Egyptian orchestra supplementing a core group of rock and roll musicians, along with four Middle-Eastern and Moroccan-influenced songs: “City Don’t Cry”, “Yallah” (or “The Truth Explodes”), “Wonderful One”, and “Wah Wah”.

The album was #4 on debut on the Billboard’s Pop Albums chart.

Several years later, Plant reflected on the collaboration very positively:

The will and the eagerness with Unledded were fantastic and [Page] was really creative. Jimmy and I went in a room and it was back. His riffs were spectacular. To take it as far as we did, and the tour we did – it’s one of the most ambitious and mind altering experiences.

Monday 8/24/2020 1pm ET: Feature Artist – Robert Plant

Robert Anthony Plant CBE (born August 20, 1948) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band Led Zeppelin.

Plant enjoyed great success with Led Zeppelin throughout the 1970s and developed a compelling image as the charismatic rock-and-roll front man, similar to contemporaries such as Roger Daltrey of the Who, Freddie Mercury of Queen, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Jim Morrison of the Doors. With his mane of long blond hair and powerful, bare-chested appearance, Plant helped to create the “god of rock and roll” or “rock god” archetype. Although Led Zeppelin dissolved in 1980, Plant occasionally collaborated with Jimmy Page on various projects through this period, including forming a short-lived all-star group with Page and Jeff Beck in 1984, called the Honeydrippers. They released an album called The Honeydrippers: Volume One, and the band had a No. 3 hit with a remake of Phil Phillips’ tune “Sea of Love”, plus a follow-up hit with a cover of Roy Brown’s “Rockin’ at Midnight”.

A powerful and wide vocal range (particularly evident in his high-pitched vocals) has given him a successful singing career spanning over 50 years. In 2008, Rolling Stone editors ranked him number 15 on their list of the 100 best singers of all time. In 2011, Rolling Stone readers ranked Plant the greatest of all lead singers. In 2006, Hit Parader magazine named Plant the “Greatest Metal Vocalist of All Time”. In 2009, Plant was voted “the greatest voice in rock” in a poll conducted by Planet Rock.
